  1. Welsh `sitting' traditional Welsh gathering
  2. lasting 3-4 days dedicated to the
  3. encouragement of the bardic arts of music,
  4. poetry, and literature, which traditionally
  5. dates from pre-Christian times. Towns and
  6. rural communities often hold their own annual
  7. eisteddfod. The national eisteddfod was
  8. discontinued from the late 17th century until
  9. the beginning of the 19th century. Since then
  10. it has been held annually. During the
  11. meetings bardic degrees are awarded and the
  12. traditional eisteddfod ends with the ceremony
  13. of `chairing' the bard (the best contestant
  14. in verse).
